Discuss your situation

YOUR CLAIM

Look beyond the first insurance offer.

A claim begins with the evidence: how the collision happened, who may be responsible, the available insurance, and how the injury affects your life. Medical records, income information, photographs, and witness accounts can all matter.

Truck collisions may require additional attention to the driver, the trucking company, vehicle condition, and records held by others. Early review helps identify what should be preserved.

GETTING ORGANIZED

What to bring to an initial conversation.

The collision

The date and location, police report information, photographs, witness details, and any letters or messages from insurers.

Your recovery

Treatment information, bills, missed work, and a description of the limitations you are experiencing. Keep relevant records as your recovery progresses.

INSURANCE & DEADLINES

Understand the questions behind your claim.

PIP: benefits under your own policy

Personal injury protection can help pay qualifying medical expenses and lost income without first resolving fault. Whether benefits are available depends on coverage, any waiver, and the facts. Bring your policy and declarations page for review.

UM/UIM: when the other driver’s insurance is insufficient

Uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage may provide another source of recovery. Standard and enhanced coverage work differently. Review the policy before accepting a settlement or signing a release that could affect these benefits.

The collateral source rule

Payments from an independent source can raise questions about what may be introduced in a lawsuit and whether reimbursement is owed. Those questions require separate analysis; paying a medical bill does not, by itself, resolve the value of a claim.

Statutes of limitations and other notice requirements

Maryland generally provides three years from accrual for a civil action, unless another law applies. Accrual, exceptions, government notice requirements, and insurance obligations can change the analysis. Seek review promptly instead of calculating a deadline from a general website summary.
